Auditing an Existing Virtual Tour for ADA Compliance: A Practical Checklist

  • Load your published tour and press Tab. Does anything visibly happen — a focus outline, a highlighted hotspot?
  • Continue pressing Tab. Can you reach every hotspot and interactive control in the current scene this way?
  • Press Enter or Space on a focused hotspot. Does it move you to the next scene, or open the relevant info panel?
  • Can you tell, visually, exactly which element is currently focused at every step?
  • Can you exit the tour, close any pop-up panels, or return to a previous scene without touching the mouse?

  • As you navigate, are scenes and hotspots announced with meaningful names ("Living Room," "Hotspot to Kitchen"), or generic labels ("button," "Scene 3"), or nothing?
  • Are you told where you are after moving to a new scene, or do you have to guess?
  • Do any embedded images, floor plans, or media within the tour have alt text that gets read aloud?

This part of the audit tends to surface the most gaps, since screen reader support is rarely something that happens by accident — it has to be deliberately built in, following principles laid out in the W3C's WCAG guidelines.

Part 3: The Visual Accessibility Audit
  • Is there any visible option for visitors to increase contrast or resize text within the tour interface?
  • If your tour includes auto-rotating scenes or animated transitions, is there a way to pause or reduce that motion?
  • Does any on-screen text (labels, captions, info panels) maintain reasonable contrast against its background across different scenes — not just the one you happened to design it against?
Part 4: The Mobile Audit

Repeat a condensed version of the above on an actual phone or tablet, not just a resized browser window:

  • Is there a visible accessibility control, and is it large enough to tap accurately?
  • Turn on VoiceOver or TalkBack and try swiping through the tour. Does anything get announced?
  • Rotate the device between portrait and landscape. Does everything still work?
Part 5: The Content Audit

  • Are your scene names descriptive ("Master Bedroom") or generic ("Scene 4")?
  • Are hotspots labeled with their destination ("Hotspot to Kitchen") rather than left unlabeled?
  • Is there a text-based alternative or summary somewhere for visitors who can't engage with the tour interactively at all?
Scoring Your Audit

If you checked most or all boxes across all five sections, your tour already has a reasonably strong accessibility foundation — worth revisiting periodically as you add content, but not an urgent overhaul.
